| Born in London, 1966. I have had a passion for photography since childhood. In adulthood it is my raison d'être. Pre 2004 along with a million snapshots were a number of composed shots that stood out from the rest. These I kept separately and pondered over what made them different. In 2004 I bought my first digital camera, a creative compact and a desire for depth of field and creativity was born. The creative compact soon gave way to my first digital SLR. Unsure of my technique my first models were the Japanese dolls Blythe and Pullip and a series of toys created by the Japanese artist Baby Sue; Pinky St. Like the Japanese I shot these dolls situationally rather than still life and got more surreal and creative with each shoot. I opened a deviantART account to display my work and get critiqued. This in turn led to some of my images being published on Japanese websites. Being published gave me the confidence I needed and a desire to push myself further. I found willing models amongst friends and family and began to experiment with people. Everything I do photographically is self taught but I have been mentored online by RJ Carroll in New Jersey. I studied the great photographers and their art in books and galleries and tried to take on board what made them so inspiring while keeping a style of my own. I have a theory that to break the rules you have to know them first. I watched many artists that post processed an image to within an inch of it's life and created work that was devoid of honesty. I worked with models that had great images in their portfolios but in real life looked nothing like their profiles suggested. As an artist and professional photographer I had found my aspiration and goal. |
